![]() ![]() I’ve also noted whether or not each segment features love, death, and/or robots, so you can focus on the episodes that actually deliver on your favorite part of the show’s three-pronged title. So which Love, Death & Robots are actively worth seeking out? To help you determine that, I’ve ranked all 18 segments below, from worst to best, doing my best to minimize spoilers along the way. In fact, you can probably skip a bunch of them and have a much better experience with the show as a whole. And, in general: Man, there is way too much sexual violence in this series.īut here’s the good news: Because Love, Death & Robots is an anthology series, you don’t actually need to watch all the episodes. Directed by Alberto Mielgo, who previously won an Emmy for an equally stunning episode in Love, Death & Robots volume 1 titled 'The Witness,' Jibaro is one of the shows most ambitious episodes, tackling a number of the most difficult aspects of animation to beautiful effect. For every original idea, there’s an idea you’ve seen dozens of times before. For every episode with a genuinely shocking twist, there’s an episode with an ending you’ve predicted from the beginning. Big congrats to Alberto Mielgo and the JIBARO team 209 5,725 35.For every episode with a striking or exciting style of animation, there’s an episode with the paint-by-numbers aesthetic of a mediocre PlayStation 4 game. The animation is even better than that of its beautifully animated predecessors, the story is so simple that it's perfect for the short format, and the anxious atmosphere is conveyed compellingly through the episode's extraordinary visuals. (Oh, and if all that doesn’t quite satisfy your Hong Kong setting/gratuitous nudity needs, you can also check out the Good Hunting episode, which features our very own Peak Tram - as well as a vengeful, frequently naked woman/fox spirit/steampunk cyborg murdering British colonialists.Taken as a whole, Netflix’s experimental animated series Love, Death & Robots is a pretty mixed bag. By no means a masterpiece, 'The Witness' is still my favourite episode of this series so far. ![]() Screenshot via Google Maps.Īnchor Street, Tai Kok Tsui Screenshot via Netflix. In the end, the sequence included several shots that are, if not outright depictions of real Hong Kong locales, then certainly very thinly veiled references to them. In an interview with the South China Morning Post, he said that her got the idea to set the short in Hong Kong from a photo of Kowloon that caught his eye.Īfter Netflix greenlit his idea, Mielgo flew to Hong Kong from Los Angeles, and spent five days wandering Kowloon, taking photos and storyboarding sequences for the chase scenes. The short was directed and written by Spanish animator Alberto Mielgo who worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and TRON: Uprising. (If all those clues escaped you, keep an eye out for the road signs directing you to “Tsim Sha Tzu” and “Huh Hom.”) THE WITNESS is a film that I wrote, directed and designed for the animation anthology series Love, Death & Robots. Hong Kong’s visual hallmarks abound in the 12-minute episode: towers of styrofoam coolers, the walk-up tenements known as tong laus, green-topped minibuses, and boxy red cabs - apparently they still have a monopoly in the future. ![]()
